Plywood for outdoor decking is an engineered timber sheet typically used as a structural substrate beneath an approved waterproof membrane and trafficable finish, not as an exposed walking surface.

For WA decks, it needs the correct structural rating, thickness, treatment and support. Sealed edges, effective drainage and compatible waterproofing are also essential. Marine, structural and exterior plywood have different properties, so they are not interchangeable.

Australian deck-design guidance does not recommend plywood sheet flooring for weather-exposed decking. Even when plywood has a durable glue bond, the sheet does not provide the drainage or complete weather protection required for an uncovered deck surface. 

Why WA Weather Changes the Plywood Choice

WA decks face intense summer heat and UV, followed by winter rain across Perth and the south-west. Northern WA adds higher humidity and seasonal downpours, while coastal locations expose fixings to salt and corrosion. Repeated wet-and-dry cycles can make plywood veneers swell, shrink, check and eventually decay, even when the glue bond remains intact.

Marine plywood offers higher-quality veneers and fewer core defects, whereas structural plywood provides verified load-bearing performance. However, neither should remain exposed as the finished deck surface. A suitable WA deck substrate must combine the correct plywood grade and treatment with sealed edges, effective drainage, ventilation, corrosion-resistant fixings and an approved waterproofing system.

Marine Plywood: Better Veneers, but Not Waterproof

Marine plywood is manufactured for demanding marine and moisture-prone applications. Compared with general construction plywood, its main qualities include:

Although marine plywood offers better veneer quality and moisture tolerance, it is not a finished waterproof deck surface. For residential decking, confirm the selected panel’s structural capacity and compatibility with the specified waterproofing system. Marine plywood should not replace  AS/NZS 2269  structural plywood unless the project designer approves its declared structural properties

Structural Plywood: Designed to Carry Loads

AS/NZS 2269 structural plywood has defined engineering properties and a permanent Type A phenolic bond. It is sold in stress grades such as F8, F11 and F14. The F-rating identifies the plywood’s structural strength and stiffness; it does not describe surface quality or waterproofing. A higher F-number generally indicates greater structural capacity, but the correct grade still depends on the deck loads, span, panel thickness, support spacing and face-grain direction. 

The Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA), an engineered wood industry body, notes that marine and structural plywood of equal thickness are not normally direct substitutes. Marine plywood generally has more, thinner veneers, while structural plywood may use thicker face veneers that provide greater stiffness in the main span direction.

Can Waterproof or Exterior Plywood Be Used for Outdoor Decking?

“Waterproof plywood” is often a marketing term for plywood with a durable glue bond. The adhesive may resist wet conditions, but the timber veneers can still absorb water, swell and decay. Effective deck waterproofing requires a compatible membrane system, correct falls, sealed joints and penetrations, and a suitable trafficable finish.

AS/NZS 2271 exterior plywood is non-structural, even when manufactured with a phenolic bond. It may suit protected joinery, but it should not be used as a load-bearing deck substrate. Exterior structural plywood for decking should instead be verified as AS/NZS 2269 structural plywood and specified with the treatment and protection required for its exposure.

How to Specify Plywood for Outdoor Use in WA

Before ordering plywood for outdoor use, check these points with the builder, engineer or waterproofing supplier:

  1. Confirm its role. Is the sheet a structural substrate, covered lining or part of a proprietary trafficable system?
  2. Check the stamp. Look for AS/NZS 2269, F-grade, face grades, bond type and manufacturer identification.
  3. Do not guess thickness. Span, joist spacing, loads, sheet direction and membrane requirements govern selection.
  4. Match treatment to exposure. H2S termite treatment is not H3 treatment for outside, above-ground weather exposure.
  5. Use a complete system. Primer, membrane, joints, flashings, penetrations and finish must be approved for that plywood.
  6. Control water. Provide specified falls, drainage and ventilation; prevent ponding and moisture traps.
  7. Protect every opening. Reseal cuts and holes as directed by the treatment and membrane suppliers.
  8. Use compatible fixings. Choose corrosion-resistant hardware; stainless steel is normally preferred in severe coastal exposure.
